A few Bullfinches and Redpolls

lørdag 18. november 2023
af Antonia Greil

Today was a quiet day of ringing. The wind was increasing throughout the day, so we had to close the Lighthouse Nets a little earlier than the Station. As we opened nets in the Stationgarden, two beautiful male Bullfinches (Dompap) immediately flew in. That was a promising start, and male Bullfinches are just really a very nice sight. Still, the day was not as good in numbers as yesterday. In the Lighthouse we only caught one Blackbird (Solsort). The Garden was better, with 4 lovely Redpolls (Gråsisken), three of them being male. In general, throughout all species, we did catch more males than females today, which is coincidence but still kind of interesting. We recaptured some Blue, Great and Coal Tits, which seem to have been staying in the garden for some days now. At one point, a Sparrowhawk (Spurvehøg) got into the net, but it often depends on a few seconds if you are fast enough to reach the net before it manages to fly out again. And today we were not fast enough, sadly. But it was close! A few Waxwings were flying over the garden and we could listen to their lovely sound.
